Let's Pray for Peace

Posted on Jul 19 2016

Burleson, Tex. » The past few weeks have been difficult in the U.S., as well as around the world. We in the Southwest are in shock at the violence that seems to be occurring daily. Our hearts are broken for the families of Alton Sterling of Baton Rouge and Philando Castile of Minneapolis, whose deaths reignited a national debate on police violence and race relations.

We mourn also for the lives of Dallas police officers Patrick Zamarripa, Michael Kroll, Michael Smith, Lorne Ahrens, and Dallas Rapid Transit officer Brent Thomas, who were killed in an ambush at a peaceful protest. Seven others were wounded in the ambush.

We are horrified by the violence that has now brought the deaths of law enforcement officers Montrell Jackson, Matthew Gerard, and Brad Garafola in Baton Rouge amidst peaceful protests. Three other officers were also wounded.

These events, as well as the terroristic attacks that are happening around the world, such as the the shooting in Orlando, Florida, in which 49 people died, and the attack in Nice, France, that left more than 80 dead, have left many fearful, and wondering what can be done.

We are comforted in the knowledge that one day "He will wipe every tear from their eyes. There will be no more death or mourning or crying or pain" (Revelation 21:4). But until that day, let's do our part to promote peace and do what we can to bring hope, healing, and wholeness to those around us who are hurting. Let's press close to the Lord. Let's love our neighbor.

Cameron Sterling, Alton Sterling's son, has made a plea for unity, saying we should "come together as one united family. There should be no more arguments, disagreements, violence, crimes."

We share his sentiments, and will not let his words be in vain.

- Larry Moore, Southwestern Union Conference president
